Plant Water Requirement Question: What does 1 inch of water mean?
#1
Hello fellow farmers. Pls pardon my ignorance. Whenever I read about some crops, they normally mention something like "1 inch of water" as water requirement for the crop. In simple, clear language can someone explain this to me? Thanks in advance.

It simply means the amount of water required to cover a given area to 1 inch = 2.54cm or 0.0254m. An area of farmland that is 10m by 10m has an area of 100m2 and will require 2.54 cubic meter (2540L) of water to be covered 1 inch deep.

It is futile trying to run away from math. Most math you'll meet in your everyday bizness are quite simple.
